Transpersonal Breathwork is a simple and safe technique for healing that promotes relaxation, self-exploration and self-awareness.

During a session you will use a continuous connected breathing pattern that supports your body to unwind, express and release any blocked emotions, unresolved trauma and old stories; leaving you feeling a sense of clarity, calmness and connection to self.

Many people finish a session with feelings of joy, gratitude and love. My role is to help guide you into your breathing pattern, and support you to let go, in safety, and free from judgement.

It is best to dress comfortably for movement, and it is advised not to eat at least one hour before.

*Breathwork is not always suitable for those with cardiovascular conditions, pregnancy, some psychiatric conditions, psychosis, those having had recent surgery or fractures, acute infectious illness or epilepsy, severe hypertension, glaucoma or active spiritual emergency.

What can you expect?  

A session will last for 1.5 to 2 hours, and generally follow this format:

We will have a chat about what is going on with you, and what you would like to focus on and work through. Then we will set an intention for the session. This generally takes about 30 minutes.

When you are ready, you will lay down on a mat on the floor (I also have a table if you prefer), and I will start to talk you through your breathing – deep conscious, connected breathing. Music will be playing, which can feel like a cocoon of sound surrounding you. The music helps to inform and assist in the process of moving deeper in to your body. 

As you continue to breath you may feel emotions coming up, and the idea is to breathe into that, and let it come – explore it, and release what you can. Sometimes this can feel scary and confronting, but I want you to remember that all of your feelings are ok – the sadness, grief, fear, anger, rage, as well as the happiness, bliss, gratitude and joy. They are welcomed and held with loving support. You are in control of your body and how deep you would like to go.

I will guide you through this process with my presence, words and touch (only if that feels safe for you). You may go through a few cycles. This will generally take 45 minutes to an hour, after which you will have some time to be still and integrate the process.

We will finish with a debrief and have a chat about your session, how you are feeling and if you would like to move forward with more sessions. And that’s about it. A very simple process, with very powerful outcomes. Most people leave a session feeling very nurtured and empowered, with a deep sense of gratitude. You will also likely feel more clarity, and less fear in moving forward.

When we take deep, full belly breaths it generally helps us to feel calm. It helps to stimulate your vagal nerve and activates your parasympathetic nervous system which triggers the body to secrete hormones to decrease blood pressure and heart rate, inducing a relaxation response. So when you begin a Breathwork session with me, your body is starting to relax and unwind as soon as you start taking full belly breaths.

If you have experienced significant trauma, suffer from anxiety or have a lifetime of taking shallow chest breaths, this type of breathing may be difficult and sometimes scary. Please remember that I will always respect where my client is at and the pace at which they want to go. We will always proceed gently.

Through the conscious, connected breathing pattern, your body will take in more oxygen than usual, which changes the CO2 level in your brain, and you will feel yourself entering in to a non-ordinary state of consciousness – a meditative type state. Time feels altered. It is not uncommon for clients who have been breathing for an hour to think they have only been breathing for 15 minutes.

As you continue to breathe you may experience different bodily sensations, feeling hot or cold, a sense that your body is unwinding, energy shifting and moving through your body. Past or repressed memories may be activated. You may feel deeply connected to your ancestors, have visions and receive messages. Every session is different. Sometimes a session can feel ‘out of this world’, and other times it is very subtle. Whatever it becomes, it is always an incredible journey.
